Think Pink! Introducing a juicin’ new Mr. Pink (Watermelon Hibiscus Pale Ale, 5%)

Another mid-Summer heatwave, another brand new refreshing and crushable beer from our brewers (we’re reliable that way). We know how enthusiastic our guests are about this Summer’s return of Mr. Pink. Not only did we bring the style back after a long winter season, but we’ve also seen countless incarnations of it over the last three months, with versions and ingredients varying from strawberry to prickly pear. Our one requirement is that the beer remains as pink and refreshing as possible. Other than that, our brewers have free rein to choose new ingredients and fruit additions as they please, which makes Mr. Pink one of the beers that our team enjoys brewing a lot.

Helmed once again by our brewer Horacio, this new Mr. Pink started out with a mash of barley and wheat malts, oat flakes, orange peel, and hibiscus. For fermentation, we used Burlington yeast, a strain commonly used for New England IPAs because of its high content of fruity esters, which help provide the desired haziness and “roundness”. Perle hops, a variety that we use in most of our Mr. Pink variations, provide the beer with its distinct light bitterness. We were extremely pleased with last month’s strawberry version of Mr. Pink, so we decided to work with Belma hops once again as they provide some bright berry aromas. The beer was dry-hopped with a substantial addition of Willamette hops, giving the beer some lasting floral aromas. The addition of pureed watermelon was the very last step in the brewing of this beer, in order to keep the watermelon flavour and aroma as big as possible.
